 HI-C Featuring Tony A ‎- Skanless

Released in 1991, Hi-C Featuring Tony A – Skanless is the debut studio album from Compton rapper Hi-C and producer/DJ Tony A. The 17-track project is an early example of West Coast hip-hop rooted in the Compton scene, combining funky production, energetic rhymes, humor, street themes, and the loose, sample-heavy character of early-1990s Los Angeles rap.The album features tracks including “Leave My Curl Alone,” “Punk Shit,” “Funky Rap Sanga,” “Sitting In The Park,” “Compton Hoochies,” “Jack Move,” “Bullshit,” “2 Ada Time,” “Froggy Style,” “2 Drunk Ta F__k,” “I'm Not Your Puppet,” and “2 Skanless.” Guest appearances include 2nd II None, AMG, DJ Quik, K.K., Big Jazz, and other collaborators.Musically, Hi-C Featuring Tony A – Skanless is driven by funk samples, scratching, bass, guitar, programmed drums, and playful arrangements. Tony A. handled much of the production alongside Hi-C, DJ Quik, and executive producer Steve Yano. The album was recorded at Audio Achievements in Torrance and Skanless Studios in Alhambra, California, keeping it closely connected to the South Los Angeles recording community.Hi-C's animated delivery gives the record a distinctive personality. Rather than following an exclusively hard-edged gangsta-rap formula, he mixes street references with comedy, sexual humor, catchy phrases, and an energetic performance style. “I'm Not Your Puppet” and “Sitting In The Park” became two of the project's best-known tracks, while “Sitting In The Park” reached No. 21 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The album also has strong connections to the wider Compton and Los Angeles hip-hop movement. Tony A. and Steve Yano had developed their Roadium Swap Meet mixtape operation before turning the Hi-C material into a studio album. Skanless subsequently became the first hip-hop release associated with Hollywood Records, giving the independent Compton sound a national platform.Today, Hi-C Featuring Tony A – Skanless remains an important early-1990s Compton West Coast rap release. Its funky production, distinctive humor, DJ-driven sound, memorable collaborations, and authentic South Los Angeles character make it a valuable listen for anyone exploring the roots of West Coast hip-hop and the early G-Funk era.
