MC Trouble – Gotta Get A Grip is the only studio album by American rapper MC Trouble, released through Motown Records. The album established her as one of the first female rappers signed to the label and showcased a combination of hardcore rap, socially conscious material, and more commercial R&B-influenced tracks. Production was handled by MC Trouble, LA Jay, and other contributors.The album includes ten original tracks, beginning with “(I Wanna) Make You Mine” featuring The Good Girls, followed by “The Push Up,” “Gotta Get A Grip,” “Fly Guy,” “Black Line,” “Here Comes Trouble,” “Power Move,” “Thing For You,” “Points Proven,” and “Well Equipped.” Later expanded editions added bonus material and remixes.“(I Wanna) Make You Mine” became MC Trouble’s biggest commercial success, reaching number 15 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart. The title track was released as another single and represented the harder side of her style.Musically, Gotta Get A Grip moves between hardcore hip-hop and more accessible R&B-oriented material. Tracks such as “Black Line” and “Gotta Get A Grip” address social issues and the need for change, while songs including “Fly Guy” and “Thing For You” take a lighter and more playful approach.MC Trouble, born LaTasha Sheron Rogers, was based in Los Angeles and began recording during the late 1980s. Before the album, she released the Highroller’s Girl EP. Her Motown debut was intended to establish her as a major new voice in rap, but her career was tragically cut short.The album reached number 94 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and sold approximately 182,000 copies. Despite its modest commercial performance, it has remained an important release in the history of female hip-hop and early-1990s rap.MC Trouble died in 1991 after suffering a seizure, before she could complete her planned second album. Gotta Get A Grip therefore remains her sole full-length studio album and the central release of her brief recording career.
