Q-Unique – Throwback is a 2011 compilation collecting rare, previously unreleased and demo recordings from Q-Unique’s early years in New York underground hip-hop. Released on October 30, 2011, the project brings together material recorded between 1992 and 2002, documenting the development of Q-Unique from his early work with The Nomaads through his years with The Arsonists and collaborations with other underground MCs.Rather than functioning as a conventional studio album, Throwback serves as an extensive archive of Q-Unique’s early career. The collection contains 24 tracks and includes demos, rare recordings, radio appearances, freestyles and previously unreleased material. The official release describes it as a journey through Q-Unique’s history in hip-hop and highlights recordings from The Nomaads, Rock Steady Crew, The Arsonists and collaborations with ILL BILL.The earliest material dates back to 1992, with “Quick Wiff The Ruffness” representing the formative period of The Nomaads. Other recordings from the group include “The Ultimate,” “This Time Around,” “Statistics,” “We Be Gunnin’” and “Never Need A 9.” These tracks provide a valuable glimpse into the underground New York sound that preceded The Arsonists’ later success.The compilation also includes several collaborations with important figures from the underground scene. ILL BILL appears on “If I Really Wanna Battle” and the Stress Magazine freestyle, while Freestyle of The Arsonists contributes to “H.I.M.” Street Sweepa of the Rock Steady Crew appears on “Used To Wish I Could Break” and “The Boogie Down.” Later recordings include “Do It,” “This Is How We” and “Say I,” featuring members of The Arsonists.Musically, the collection moves through different stages of East Coast underground hip-hop, hardcore rap and boom-bap, reflecting more than a decade of development.
