Released on June 2, 1998, Onyx – Shut 'Em Down is the third studio album from the legendary Queens, New York hardcore rap group. Following Bacdafucup and All We Got Iz Us, Onyx returned with a harder, darker, and more polished sound while staying true to the aggressive style that made them one of the defining acts of East Coast hip-hop. Released through JMJ Records and Def Jam Recordings, the album remains one of the strongest hardcore rap releases of the late 1990s.Onyx – Shut 'Em Down blends crushing boom bap production with explosive performances from Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Sonny Seeza, and Big DS. Producers including Keith Horne, DJ Scratch, Bud'da, Latief, and Self crafted a powerful soundtrack built around heavy drums, dark melodies, and hard-hitting street anthems. The album also features an impressive lineup of guest appearances, including DMX, Big Pun, N.O.R.E., Method Man, Raekwon, Lost Boyz, All City, and an early official appearance by 50 Cent.Standout tracks include "Shut 'Em Down," "The Worst," "React," "Raze It Up," "Street Nigguz," "Conspiracy," and "Black Dust." The title track featuring DMX became one of the group's signature records, while "React" introduced many listeners to a then-unknown 50 Cent.
