UGK – Too Hard To Swallow is the debut studio album by American hip-hop duo UGK, consisting of Bun B and Pimp C. It was released on November 10, 1992, by Jive Records and was recorded during 1991–1992. The album is classified as Southern hip-hop and has a running time of 57 minutes and 43 seconds. Production was handled by UGK, Bernie Bismark, and Shetoro Henderson, with Russell Washington serving as executive producer.The album followed the group’s independent EP The Southern Way, released earlier in 1992. Several songs that appeared on that project were included on the Jive release, while other material was recorded specifically for the album. Five songs originally intended for the album were removed because of their explicit content and later appeared on the Banned EP.The twelve-track album opens with “Something Good” and continues with “Use Me Up,” “Pocket Full of Stones,” “Short Texas,” “Cocaine in the Back of the Ride,” “It’s Too Hard to Swallow,” “Cramping My Style,” “Feel Like I’m the One Who’s Doin’ Dope,” “I’m So Bad,” “Trill Ass Nigga,” “976-Bun B,” and “Something Good (Pimp C’s Remix).”Several tracks incorporate recognizable samples. “Something Good” samples Rufus and the Isley Brothers, while “Use Me Up” uses Bill Withers’ “Use Me.” “Cocaine in the Back of the Ride” contains a sample from Curtis Mayfield, and “Feel Like I’m the One Who’s Doin’ Dope” incorporates the Geto Boys’ “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.” Other sampled artists include the Isley Brothers and Steve Miller Band.Too Hard To Swallow reached number 37 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 14 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. It established UGK on a major label and became an early release in the development of Southern hip-hop.The album’s release marked the beginning of UGK’s major-label album career, followed by Super Tight in 1994 and Ridin’ Dirty in 1996. It remains an early document of the duo’s Port Arthur, Texas roots and their contribution to Southern hip-hop.
