King JC – The Next Episode

King JC – The Next Episode is the seventh installment in the underground catalog of Memphis rapper King JC, released in 1997 through Playalistic Records. The project belongs to the artist’s prolific 1990s period and represents the raw, independent side of Memphis rap before the city’s sound became internationally recognized. Apple Music dates the release to May 2, 1997, while archival Memphis rap sources identify it as Volume 7 in King JC’s series.
King JC, born Jeff Cage, developed his career through a long sequence of independently circulated tapes and albums. By the time The Next Episode appeared, he had already released several volumes, establishing a consistent presence within the Memphis underground. His catalog would eventually extend through numerous numbered projects, collaborations and compilations.
The release contains eight tracks, with the original sequence opening with “Blackhaven” featuring Pistol Grip, followed by the title track “The Next Episode,” “Gunnin’ 4 You,” “Take A Ride (M-Town)” and “My Dear.” The second half continues with “Once Again It’s On,” “Nuttin’ But The Funk,” “In The Wind,” “Break ‘Em Off” featuring Eclipse The Lyrical Assassin and “Playalistic” featuring the Playalistic Posse.
Musically, the project sits firmly within the Memphis and broader Southern rap tradition of the late 1990s. G-funk influences, heavy Southern production and straightforward MC performances provide the foundation, while the album’s relatively compact format keeps the focus on King JC’s delivery and the atmosphere of the underground scene.
The Memphis setting is particularly important to the record’s identity. King JC’s work belongs to the same independent ecosystem that produced numerous influential underground tapes during the 1990s, when artists circulated music through local networks rather than relying on major-label distribution.
King JC – The Next Episode is therefore valuable as an archival snapshot of Memphis rap during its formative underground period. It captures King JC’s distinctive approach to Southern hip-hop while documenting the independent tape culture that helped shape the city’s rap history.
For collectors of Memphis rap, Southern hip-hop and rare underground releases, this seventh volume offers an essential look at an artist whose extensive catalog developed largely outside the mainstream.
