Julian B – Once Upon A Genocide is the debut album by Native American rapper Julian B, originally from Oklahoma and of Muscogee heritage. Released through SOAR’s Warrior label, the album is a politically focused work of hip-hop centered on colonialism, Indigenous identity, cultural survival, and social injustice. Julian B’s music is frequently compared with the politically conscious approach of Public Enemy, while his lyrics focus strongly on the experiences and history of Native peoples. The album contains twelve tracks and runs for approximately 54 minutes. The tracklist includes “Genocide in Progress,” “How Soon We Forget,” “Change Makes Sense,” “There and Beyond,” “Movement,” “Indian Fan,” “The Record Speaks for Itself,” “Bringin’ the Agony,” “Know Who You Are,” “Twisted Dreams,” “You Get What You Wish For,” and “The Spirit of Crazy Horse.”Once Upon A Genocide opens with a direct statement about the continuing effects of genocide against Native peoples, establishing the album’s political and confrontational direction. The songs address subjects including patriotism, law and order, cultural identity, Native imagery, youth alienation, and self-determination. “Indian Fan” examines cultural appropriation, while “Change Makes Sense” addresses cultural disconnection and youth gangs. The album’s closing track, “The Spirit of Crazy Horse,” is dedicated to Leonard Peltier and reflects on his imprisonment and the controversy surrounding his conviction. Other material combines social commentary with personal reflections, giving the project both political and autobiographical dimensions.Musically, the record relies on synthesizer programming, samples, and recorded speech rather than heavily layered conventional instrumentation. Contemporary criticism described the production as gritty and deliberately unpolished, with news reports, speeches, and movie excerpts incorporated into the arrangements.Julian B later released Injunuity in 2002, making his debut one of only two albums listed in his main discography. He has also performed at Native American festivals, powwows, and events connected with Indigenous political causes.
